It's a place where the climate changes like your mood. Kinnakorai, situated at the tip of the Nilgiris, on the Kerala-tamilnadu border,is inhabited by a few score Badaga families that still believe in old-words Hospitality.
A penstock is a sluice or floodgate to regulate the flow of water. The word originated in the early 17th Century from Pen (in the sense of `mill dam') and Stock (presumably of water). The penstock I visit is said to be one of the ten in the Nilgiris and is located in the quaintly named Nickval Town. The energy from the water, channelled through cast-iron pipes, is used to run a turbine and generate power at the Canada power station in Geddai.
Ooty or Udagamandalam (the Tamil version of the original name) rightly described as "Queen of Hill Stations" by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, now sprawls over an area of 36 sq km with a number of tall buildings cluttering its hill slopes. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above sea level. Though the march of brick and mortar has laid waste its thick sholas which one saw in a bygone era, it still woos people from all over India as well as foreign countries right through summer, and sometimes in the winter months too. An added attraction for the tourists to Udagamandalam is the mountain train journey on a ratchet and pinion track which commences from Kallar, near Mettupalayam and wends its way through many hair-raising curves and fearful tunnels and chugs along beside deep ravines full of verdant vegetation, gurgling streams and tea gardens.

The park is situated in a deep ravine on the Northern side of Coonoor Railway Station at an elevation of 1768 to 1798 mts. The park can be divided into eight major sections. The natural shola with winding footpaths all over the higher slopes of the park is the most distinctive and picturesque feature of this park. This apart a number of individual tree specimens planted in a scattered fashion all over the place, lend a special charm to the park, specially when they bloom in different seasons throughout the year.

The Famous Mudumalai wild life Sanctuary is situated at an elevation of 1000 metres and extends over an area of 321 sq.mts. This sanctuary lies between Kerala and Karnataka states. This is India's one of the best sanctuaries. Nature has been lavish in providing this sanctuary with thickly wood hills, Plateaus, deep valleys, waterfalls, rivers, marshes and streams. Mudumalai Sanctuary, rich in bio-diversity and dense vegetation, is sandwiched between the Bandipur and Annamalai sanctuaries, and together the three form the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve in the Western Ghats. The Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary has varied mixture of flat land, undulating parkland, open grassland, swamp and valleys . The best season to visit the sanctuary is during March-June.
